Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on correcting bites and fixing teeth that are not straight. Orthodontic treatment can take several months and multiple visits with your dentist. It is advisable to start Orthodontic treatment early on to get it’s full benefits.
Crooked teeth can result in a bad or uneven bite due to which you could suffer from tooth decay, bone loss or abnormal wear and tear of the tooth enamel. In some cases this can also lead to jaw pain and regular headaches.
Your orthodontist will work as a team with your dentist to ensure you get the best possible solution for your teeth. The treatment could include fixed dental braces or removable braces also known as aligners.
Fixed dental braces need to be worn 24/7 and only your orthodontist can make changes to it or remove it completely. The conventional type of fixed braces include an arced wire and metal ties to keep it in place. You also have to option to choose ceramic braces which are less visible and blend with the natural color of your teeth. They perform the same function as metal braces.
Removable braces, also called as aligners, are worn all day except during eating or drinking and brushing your teeth. Since these braces can be removed from the mouth it is important to remember to wear them for the prescribed amount of time failing which will lengthen the duration of the treatment.
Invisible Braces are functionally similar to traditional braces. The main difference is that invisible braces use tooth colored brackets and tooth colored wires instead of the traditional metal wires. This makes them less visible. With clear aligners the treatment is barely visible.
Each of these options has it’s advantages and disadvantages and is recommended depending on factors such age and the severity of the condition.
Invisible Braces are recommended for teenagers and adults. They are not recommended for children with baby teeth.
Orthodontic treatment will require you to visit your orthodontist multiple times for follow ups. Dental braces will take some time getting used to and you may experience some discomfort and pain, especially in the first week. Your dentist may prescribe an over the counter analgesic to control the pain.
The braces will remain in your mouth for the prescribed amount of time. Once you have completed wearing your braces for the required time and your orthodontist is satisfied with the result, he will remove the braces and give you a retainer to wear. This retainer will have to be worn for a prescribed amount of time. The retainer helps to keep your teeth from moving back to their original crooked position.
You will be able to get an examination from leading dentist.
