When should I take my child to the dentist?

There are various factors to determine when your child should visit your dentist, which include age, your child’s general health and teeth condition.

We recommend a visit to your dentist right after the eruption of the first tooth or before their first birthday. Visiting your dentist regularly can also help your child to overcome any fear or anxiety they may have.

During your visit your dentist will look for any cavities, general condition of the teeth, any defects in development of the palate and soft tissues in the mouth.

What should I expect ?

The dental check up may vary depending on your child’s age and health condition.
Here’s what you can expect on your visit to the dentist.

  • Your dentist will talk to you about your child’s food habits and examine your child’s oral hygiene
  • Talk to you about proper cleaning techniques for your child’s teeth
  • Examine your child’s teeth for any kind of decay, cavities
  • Clean your child’s teeth, remove any food deposits and stains
  • Examine the inside of the mouth for bumps, sores or ulcers
  • Check the condition of the tongue
  • Repair any tooth cavities
  • Take an X-ray of the mouth if necessary

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), is an initiative by the Australian government that provides benefits for general dental services for children aged between 2 and 17 years. The CDBS covers upto $1,000* over 2 calendar years. Here is a list of some of the services included.
